About the Blog
Naked Sunflower came from our heart. It’s really just who we are and what we love to do. We love cooking and baking, photography, writing, and being together. This is just a place we get to put it all together and share it with you!
The name Naked Sunflower is probably leaving you confused and curious, maybe even a little scared. Allow me to let you in on the meaning. The term is something that we think simultaneously describes who we are and the style of our food. Naked symbolizes naturalness and transparency. Sunflower symbolizes beauty and freedom. We believe that there is beauty in what is natural and that freedom comes from transparency. We often embrace the beauty of the natural Earth by photographing it, hiking, stargazing, and all those other kinds of fun things. We have found freedom from issues that hold us back in life by being open and honest – transparent – with ourselves and each other. It’s the key to a good relationship and life! As for the food side of things – isn’t all the food the Earth can grow beautiful?! Heirloom tomatoes are gorgeous gems in my eyes. Keegan adores the unexpected beauty underneath the watermelon radishes’ mundane exterior. These earth ingredients are transparent. You know what’s in them and you can trust that they are pure. Therefore, your body remains healthy when the bulk of your diet is based on these things. You feel better, have more energy, and get full of vitamins and minerals. I’d say that’s pretty freeing as well.
We have based this food blog off of Isaiah 55:2. All translations get the point across, but my personal favorite for this verse is from The Message:
“Why do you spend your money on junk food, your hard earned cash on cotton candy? Listen to me; listen well: eat only the best, fill yourself with only the finest.”
We believe that food is something to be respected. It sustains us and provides us with the nutrients we need to be healthy. Therefore, we buy food we believe has been treated in the best way possible and can provide us with the most of what it has to offer. We prefer organic and local produce, grass fed meats, and quality brand foods.
I know that I often find comfort and inspiration in reading about peoples’ stories, where they’ve been, what they’ve overcome, and what they’ve learned. That is why I will sometimes share a story or something that I’ve recently learned along with a new (and delicious, of course) recipe. I believe there is beauty and power in the realness that we share. My hope is that you find some of that from this website. Whether it be inspiration from a story I tell or motivation to eat better foods or just genuine happiness when you read our blog, I just want you to feel that! Thanks for sticking around!
